Differentiation with Technology

Technology has become a vital component of a students’ education and academic success. Technology implementation in the academic setting has many benefits to better improve our students’ learning experiences. Technology in the classroom prepares students “for a more unpredictable and changing future in which technology will play a critical role” (Haleem et.al, 2022, pg. 276). Collaborative learning, digital applications, virtual scavenger hunts, technology devices, etc.; all these resources provide students with opportunities to build upon their creativity, communication with others, global awareness, and knowledge and understanding of cultures other than their own.             In the three-day remediation unit plan, I ensured that the technologies implemented within the lesson plan were developmentally appropriate, engaging, targeted students’ individual learning ...

Designing a Differentiated Lesson Plan

Designing and implementing curriculum that is equitable for all creates an inclusive, welcoming, and meaningful learning environment for all students. Often, instruction can be misaligned or can biasedly target students who are from privileged backgrounds who have greater access to resources and opportunities who students from other backgrounds may not. Curriculum design and implementation that incorporates every student regardless of their funds of knowledge, access to resources, social-economic status, culture, language, abilities, etc., begins with understanding students’ diverse learning needs and styles and defining what ‘mastery’ means for each student. “Students’ learning styles help the academics to understand ‘learner diversity’ and therefore encourages them to make learning environments balanced and varied; catering to diverse learning styles may promote student-centered learning” (Balakrishnan, 2016, p. 334).   As effective ...

Learning Styles Analysis

Image
When determining students’ individual learning styles and assessing how students learn best, it is also important to consider how to gather, interpret, differentiate, and implement this student data. Following the completion of the learning styles inventory with 3 of my students, I had an opportunity to reflect on the impact of students learning styles, their individual learning needs, how these are interconnected to the students’ cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical development, how their learning styles influence instructional planning, and the importance of addressing learning styles when developing and implementing assessments for the students.             K.R., A.R., and A.I.’s learning styles inventory results were further analyzed to find commonalities and differences in how they learn best. From the student data, I was able to analyze how their learning styles may be interconnected to ...

Assessing Technology-Based Resources for Differentiation

A modern-day classroom environment requires that students are provided with equitable and invigorating learning experiences which enhance their academic and social-emotional potential. The question in education is no longer if technology should be implemented into a classroom learning environment, but rather, it’s a matter of assessing how technology is best implemented into daily instruction to better meet the diverse learning needs of our equally diverse student population. Technology in the classroom creates engaging and relevant modes of learning and “helps students take a more active role in their learning” (Torchia, 2022). Flipgrid, Jamboard, I-Ready, and Interactive whiteboards are all current technologies that can be used to appropriately support differentiated instruction and enrich student learning styles.             Flipgrid is a digital tool that allows students to create video responses to ...
